How can we help?
Step-by-step answers for PVology, written for what you are trying to do.
PVology StrategyPulse
- Can I link objectives to initiatives, projects or KPIs?Not directly yet. Objectives have no initiative list or links. Today you can name the objective on portfolio requests in PVology Projects and score their strategic alignment, and track measures as KPIs in PVology Performance.
- Can I see KPI trends or history? Not yet. A KPI keeps only its current value. The History card shows when it was created or updated and by whom, but not past values or charts.
- How to add a KPIIn Performance choose New KPI, enter the Name, owner, status, unit, target, current value and reporting period, then choose Create KPI.
- How to add a strategic objectiveIn Strategy choose New objective, enter the Title, description, owner, status, start date and target date, then choose Create objective.
- How to add commentary to a KPI resultOn the measure's Actuals tab, fill in the Commentary when you submit an actual, or use Commentary for the period afterwards and choose Save commentary: what happened, why, impact, forecast, action and decision required.
- How to approve a strategy, revise it and see its versionsOn the strategy's Summary, Lifecycle moves it Draft → Under review → Approved → Active: Submit for approval, Approve, Make active. Change an approved strategy with Start a revision; each approval records a version on the Versions tab.
- How to build an objective hierarchy and contribution linksOn an objective's Alignment tab, set the parent objective or choose Add a child objective, and add contribution links: Contributes to, Supports, Depends on, Aligns to or Conflicts with. Levels run from Enterprise to Business unit, Department and Team.
- How to calculate a KPI from a formulaOn the measure's Formula tab write the expression with measure references such as [KPI-0003] / [KPI-0004] * 100, choose Save formula, then Calculate now. A missing input or division by zero gives No data, never 0; each result keeps the formula version and inputs.
- How to change a KPI target safely (versions and approval)On the measure's Targets tab use Change the target with a reason and the date it applies from, then Save target. Every change is a new version; on an approved strategy it waits for the owner's or sponsor's approval while the target in effect keeps applying.
- How to choose a KPI's direction (higher, lower, target value or range)On the measure's Definition (or the How it is judged step of New measure) choose the Direction: Higher is better, Lower is better, Target value, Target range, Binary or milestone, or Custom. The calculated status reads the actual against the target in that direction.
- How to close or reopen a reporting periodOpen Measures & KPIs → Reporting periods. Organization owners and administrators choose Close period on an ended period to lock its actuals, and Reopen with a reason to correct it.
- How to connect PVology Value to objectives, initiatives and outcomesOn an initiative choose Start value study (one study per initiative, created in PVology Value with the initiative's context). On an outcome choose Link proposal to name the value recommendation that realizes it. An objective's Related tab shows linked value records.
- How to create a strategic initiative and prioritize itOpen Initiatives → New initiative: name, strategy, the objectives it delivers, owner, sponsor, dates and delivery (ProjectOrbit projects, Non-project work or Both). Rate it on Prioritization; the weighted rating shows its basis beside the priority a person sets.
- How to create a strategy with the wizardOpen Strategies → New strategy and choose Start from blank (or a template). Work through Start, Period and ownership, Purpose and direction, Current situation, Themes, Objectives, Risks and assumptions, and Access and governance, then choose Create strategy. Only the name is required.
- How to create and compare a scenario (what if?)Open More → Scenarios → New scenario, give it a kind (Base, Upside, Downside or Custom) and the first change, then Add change for targets, assumptions, forecasts, initiative timing or investment. Compare it with the live strategy, then Adopt scenario or archive it. A scenario never changes the live strategy by itself.
- How to define an outcome and record whether it was realizedOpen Outcomes → New outcome (or Add an outcome on an objective or initiative) with its level, baseline, expected result, measure, target and expected date. When it is time, open it and choose Record decision with the realization and its basis. Completing a project never realizes an outcome.
- How to explore the North River strategy sampleChoose Explore the sample on the Overview (or Add the North River sample on New strategy). It adds a fictional 2027-2030 strategy with themes, objectives, measures in every state, initiatives, outcomes, an assumption, a scenario and a completed review, linked to sample projects, risks and value. Sample records are labelled and removable.
- How to generate a review packComplete the review, then choose Generate the review pack. It is issued as PDF, Word or Excel and keeps the targets, actuals, statuses, commentary, decisions and strategy version as at the review; it never changes afterwards.
- How to generate Strategy on a PageOpen the strategy and choose Strategy on a page: purpose, themes and objectives, measures and targets, key initiatives, expected outcomes and top risks on one page. Choose Download as PDF, Word or Excel to issue it.
- How to get around PVology Strategy & PerformanceOpen Applications → Strategy & Performance. The navigation is Overview, My work, Strategies, Objectives, Measures & KPIs, Initiatives, Outcomes, Reviews, Reports and More. - How to link a risk to a strategic objectiveOpen the objective → Related and choose Record a risk to this objective in Governance & Assurance (New risk opens with the objective prefilled), or choose the objective on an existing risk. The objective then shows the risk and any appetite exception.
- How to link an initiative or objective to ProjectOrbit projectsOn the initiative's Delivery tab choose Create ProjectOrbit project (one project per initiative) or Link project, or Propose to portfolio for a ProjectOrbit portfolio's intake. A project can also be linked straight to an objective. Nothing is copied: the live project summary is read from ProjectOrbit.
- How to read a KPI from CRM (or ProjectOrbit, Value, Governance & Assurance)On the measure's Source tab choose a PVology figure, for example CRM win rate, pipeline value or days to close, and choose Bind source. The figure comes from the source application's own calculation; if it cannot be read, the measure shows Source unavailable with the last value.
- How to read the executive strategy & performance briefOpen Overview → Executive brief. It lists facts first, each with its source and a link: objectives and measures by status, linked records shown as possible factors, decisions waiting, invalid assumptions and outcomes due. Optionally choose Word the brief with PVology AI.
- How to read the Strategy dashboardThe top of Strategy shows Total objectives and a count for each status (Draft, Active, At risk, Achieved, Cancelled). Counts include real records only.
- How to record a management decision and its follow-up actionsIn a review choose Record a decision (or Reviews → Decisions and actions → Record a decision): the decision type, what was decided and why, alternatives, evidence, expected outcome and review date. Add action for each follow-up, or save the reason no action is needed; later record the outcome review.
- How to record and monitor strategic assumptionsOpen More → Assumptions → New assumption with the statement, owner, source, confidence, impact if false, whether it is critical, a monitoring measure and a review date. Review it with Reviewed: still holds or Change status. An invalid critical assumption lists what it affects and asks for a strategy review.
- How to record strategic context and analysis (SWOT, external environment and more)Open the strategy → Context and choose Add an analysis item with its tool (SWOT, External environment (PESTLE-style), Stakeholders, Capabilities, Strategic issues, Customers and market, Other notes). An item can Turn into an objective or Raise as a governance risk.
- How to restrict a confidential strategy to named membersOpen the strategy → Access, choose Restricted to named members and Add member as Viewer, Contributor or Manager. Its objectives, measures, initiatives, outcomes, scenarios, reviews and decisions stay hidden from everyone else everywhere in PVology.

- How to update the status of a strategic objectiveOpen the objective, choose Draft, Active, At risk, Achieved or Cancelled in Status, and choose Save changes.
- How to use a strategy template (scorecard-style, OKR-style and others)On New strategy, choose Use this template on Strategy and KPIs, Scorecard-style perspectives, OKR-style objectives and key results, Cascade and deployment, Outcome-based results chain, Public-sector outcome model or Project or program strategy. A template sets starting themes, words and rhythm over the same records; change anything.
- How to use PVology AI safely in Strategy & PerformancePVology AI prepares drafts for review: candidates from a plan, objective quality checks, measure suggestions without targets, assumptions not yet recorded, commentary and possible contributing factors. Each item is labelled and nothing changes until you accept it; AI never approves, changes a target or decides.
- How to use the Strategy & Performance dashboards, reports and exportsOpen Reports and choose Generate report on a strategy report (Strategic plan, Strategy on a page, Strategy map, Executive strategy, Objectives, KPI scorecard, Performance, Initiative portfolio, Outcome realization, Alignment, Strategy-to-execution traceability). More → Dashboards has views for six roles. Exports are in Excel or CSV.

- PVology Performance: common questionsPerformance needs the application in your plan and, in an organization, a licence. AI help inside Performance is not available yet. Sample KPIs can be added and removed, and Export CSV downloads your records.
- PVology Strategy: common questionsStrategy needs the application in your plan and, in an organization, a licence. AI help inside Strategy is not available yet. Sample objectives can be added and removed, and Export CSV downloads your records.
- What do On track, Watch and Off track mean for a KPI?They are the status the KPI owner chooses: On track (meeting the target), Watch (needs attention) and Off track (not meeting the target). PVology does not calculate the status from target and current value.
- Why can't I open Strategy & Performance (or a part of it)?The page says why: not part of your plan, no licence, a role without the permission, read-only access, a restricted strategy you are not a member of, or an organization still waiting for review. Strategy opens the strategy side, Performance opens Measures & KPIs.
- Why can't I update this KPI?Why can't I? on the measure's Actuals tab gives the reason: the reporting period is closed, the measure is calculated from a formula or archived, your access to Performance is read-only or missing, or you are a viewer of the restricted strategy it serves.
- Why does my KPI say No data (it used to say On track)?Since release 0.45.0 the status is calculated: a period that is due without an accepted actual is No data, never On track and never 0. Before, the status was chosen by hand and new KPIs started as On track even without a value. The earlier status is kept on the record.
