Source of truth: which system owns each record and field
Short answer: Every connection says which side is the source of truth: PVology authoritative, the other system authoritative, PVology reads the other system, PVology publishes to it, controlled two-way (one owner per field) or reference only. A connection never changes which application owns a record unless it is explicitly set up to be authoritative.
